$35, or $25 for Art Habit members (Learn about becoming a member here.)
The first installment in Art Habit’s Getting Started Series, this quick afternoon workshop is intended to jumpstart your drawing practice by giving you a basic introduction to the techniques and materials essential to drawing in pencil.
Graphite pencil is often the very first medium people choose when starting out in art. After all, we all have a pencil and piece of paper lying around somewhere, and scribbling with a yellow HB is a lot less daunting than mixing oils or breaking out the turpentine. At the same time, there is a lot to know about pencils, such as hardness grades, blending, which type of pencil to use when, and what kind of eraser or paper to use. Once you get into using graphite pencils, it’s a lot more complicated than it seems.
This workshop will help you learn more about graphite as a medium and expand your understanding of its possibilities within your artistic practice. We will go over the basics of selecting and using drawing pencils, how to hold, erase, and sharpen them correctly (no, it’s not actually as straightforward as you might think), and the differences between different brands of graphite art pencils on the market. You will have the opportunity to experiment with different types of pencil and paper, finding the perfect combo to highlight your drawing style. We will then practice various mark making techniques in graphite and cover some basic drawing exercises to help improve your pencil drawing.
This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners to advanced artists interested in learning more about a familiar medium.
Cost for 2.5 hour workshop with coffee and snacks is $35, or $25 for Art Habit members. All materials are included, though you are very welcome to bring your own pencils if you have questions about them or want advice.
The instructor is Art Habit owner and resident artist, Sarah Castille.
