Schools cannot always meet the needs of our most creative kids. That’s where Art Habit steps in! Our classes for teenagers (ages 11-18) focus on teaching foundational drawing and painting skills, while feeding teenagers’ needs to explore new ideas and materials in a fun and non-judgmental setting. We will start with observational drawing techniques, gradually moving onto an introduction to classical drawing practices. We will also experiment with pen and ink and printmaking, while regularly looking at art historical subjects as an inspiration for our work. All skill and experience levels are welcome to join.

Enrollment is on a month-by-month basis, giving you the flexibility to feed your teenager’s creativity without sacrificing your family vacation schedule.

September: Drawing Basics Your kid will learn basic drawing and sketching techniques, with a focus on drawing from life. The first day starts with drawing a self-portrait. (The final project of the year will also be a self-portrait, giving your child a chance to see how far they’ve come with their art!) From there, we’ll back it up and strip down to the basics, looking at perspective, value, creating form, and tools for sketching from life.

October: Cast Drawing and Classical Techniques Your child will have the chance to explore classical drawing techniques in charcoal, culminating in a cast drawing. Classical drawing is a challenging — but very rewarding — style which will help your child develop the skills necessary to draw realistically from life.

November: Tetrapak Printmaking and Linocuts Now that we’ve explored drawing techniques, we’ll put them to use in developing our linework through printmaking. We’ll experiment with both intaglio and relief printing, as well as the development of original designs and concepts.

Note: We’ll take a break in December and January to accommodate hectic holiday schedules and meet up again in February for color theory and painting in watercolor and acrylic.

Price: Classes cost $85 per month and start the first week of each month. There’s a $20 supply fee for the school year to cover supplies, payable on registration.

Enrollment is on a rolling monthly basis, starting the first of the month. It’s OK for students to join at any time of the year, as accommodations will be made for students who missed earlier lessons.
