Art Classes for Adults
How do classes at Art Habit work?
Classes are scheduled on a month-to-month basis. You pay a flat fee per month, due when you register for the class. (If you are a returning student, registration for the next month starts on Monday of week three of classes. Make sure to register if you want to keep your spot!)
What if I have never drawn/painted/made prints/embroidered/taken photographs before?
Unless explicitly stated otherwise in the class description, all classes are designed to accommodate both new and returning students, so don’t feel shy about joining a class with students who have already been studying for a while! Everyone was a beginner at some point, and there’s no shame in learning something new.
What if my class falls on a holiday?
You are guaranteed 4 classes per month. If your class falls on a holiday during a month when we have 5 class days (for instance, if you are taking a Monday class and there are 5 Mondays in that month), then there will be no make-up class. If your class falls on a holiday and there are only 4 class days that month, either your instructor will schedule a makeup class or you will only have to pay for 3 classes that month. (Shortened months and reduced fees will be announced at the time of sign up.) Your instructor will do their absolute best to accommodate everyone when scheduling the makeup class.
Can I pay for only half of the month because I am going out of town/on vacation/busy?
Unfortunately, our classes are structured on a 4-week format, so you cannot have a discount if you do not attend all 4 weeks. You are welcome to miss class, and we will do our best to get you caught up when you return.
Art Classes for Children
Can I attend class with my child?
For some reason, many children have trouble focusing, staying on task, or participating in class when their parents are in the room. For that reason, we ask that you either wait in the maker space (feel free to pick up a little craft in our art shop to pass the time!) or leave and return when it is time to pick up your child. However, if you have a special needs child who requires your assistance during class, then by all means, you are welcome to attend class! Please contact us in advance to let us know your child’s needs, how you will assist them, and what we can do to support you.
Can I drop my child off early/ pick them up late? Just this one time?
Unfortunately, we cannot offer childcare for late pickups and early drop offs. There are many breakable/expensive/dangerous/poisonous things in the art studio and children must be supervised at all times. Please do not drop your child off more than 5 minutes before the start of class or pick them up more than 5 minutes before the end. Even just this one time. (Sorry.)

What if I have a very motivated child, but cannot afford class?
Life is expensive. If you have issues with payment, contact Sarah here or come into the store to talk to her in person.
Memberships
How do memberships work?
Each month, you pay a membership fee that allows you to access our studio space during opening hours. You can get online, work on your own creative projects, or experiment with our member art supplies. As a member, you will also get 10% off of art supply retail (discount does not apply to original art for sale) and first dibs on class and workshop signups. You can also bring a friend one day a month and they can enjoy the same benefits you do, minus the 10% discount (sorry).
Do you offer family memberships?
Yes. At Art Habit, a family counts as two adults and the dependents of one of those adults (more or less). That means that a mom, her three kids, and that mom’s best friend who sometimes helps out with childcare is a family. A grandmother, a dad, and that dad’s two kids is a family. Two grandparents and their grandkids are a family. And, of course, two parents and their kids are a family. This means that you can get a family membership and choose to include the people who will really be using the membership, even if they don’t live with you or are not related to you by blood.
However, we ask that you limit the membership to one family unit. Two best friends who live in separate households and each have their own set of kids cannot combine their families to sign up for a family membership together. If you have any questions about who qualifies, feel free to ask when you sign up.
How does the reduced fee membership work?
Art can be pretty expensive — we know this as well as anyone. That’s why we offer a sliding scale membership fee for those who need it. If you are in school, currently struggling with unemployment, on sick leave, have limited means for any reason, or are just trying to make ends meet with spotty freelance gigs, you qualify for our reduced fee membership. There’s no need to prove your need. Just click “reduced fee membership” at checkout.
We have a family membership. Can I drop my kids off for a few hours to use the maker space while I go to The Hive/The Kitchen Shop/antique shopping with my friends?
Children under the age of 14 must be supervised by an adult. An adult is a family member, friend, or babysitter over the age of 18 who is responsible for the children. If your children aren’t cooperating while you want to shop or chat with friends, why not find a family friendly craft at our art store and do it together? Once they get absorbed in what they’re doing, you’ll have plenty of time for gossip, we promise.
Art Store
Why are art supplies so expensive?
Believe us, we ask ourselves the same question every day. High quality art supplies are pricey, but they really do positively affect the outcome of your work. If you are struggling to afford the supplies you need, you can get a membership which includes a 10% discount on all art supplies retailed in our shop. You can also come in and ask Sarah for advice on how you can keep your art practice simple and affordable. She has a lot of advice on this subject, even though she rarely follows it herself.
Do you offer returns or refunds?
Unopened items in pristine condition can be returned after 30 days with a receipt. If items are defective for any reason, please come in and talk to us and we will investigate the problem together.
Why isn’t everything in the shop available in the online store?
Running a business with so many moving parts is complicated! We are building the online store slowly, and our first priority is really focusing on our classes and community-building efforts.
Do you offer delivery?
Not yet! (Check out the answer to the question above for more information.)
Why don’t you carry x, y, or z?
If you have any requests for products or recommendations, we’d love to hear them! Please contact us here.
Would you be interested in stocking my product?
Very possibly! Send Sarah an e mail if you are a maker who would like to sell in the shop. We are looking for original art, handmade art supplies, and other wares of interests to artists and art enthusiasts. In your e mail, please let us know your wholesale price, where your product is sold, and how much it is sold for. (If you do not know what price you want and you are new to selling, that’s OK. Just come in and talk to us!) If you are interested in selling on consignment, our fee is 30%.
Artists
How does consignment work?
Send us an e mail or show up in person with detailed photographs or examples of the work you would like to sell. If it suits our store mission and we have room for it, you will sign a consignment agreement. We will display your work in our shop for three months. If it is sold, you will receive 70% of the selling price by bank deposit on or around the first of the month. If it doesn’t sell, we may ask you to come collect your work after the three month period is over.
What is The Drip?
We’re so glad you asked! The Drip is a new concept for selling art that makes it easier and more accessible for buyers to collect original, local art. Artists make original work in three square formats – -small, medium, and large. Their works are priced according to size, regardless of the medium or artist. Buyers can also pick up a locally-made frame on the spot and take home a ready-to-hang work of art the same day. The Drip is not part of Art Habit, but it is housed in Art Habit’s space and enthusiastically endorsed by Art Habit. If you are interested in purchasing, participating, or have more questions, contact The Drip here.
Can I teach a workshop or class?
We’d love to hear from any artists interested in teaching either weekly classes or workshops! Send us a simple bio (or CV) and images of your work, along with a short description of what you would like to teach. Please let us know about any prior teaching experience you have, even if it is not in the creative arts. We will reach out to discuss the next steps.
