Art Classes for Children

Creativity starts early. Arts education inspires children to think in new and unusual ways, strategize and plan, learn proper sequencing of tasks, and develop a curiosity for the incredible world in which they live.

Our classes for children are based on changing monthly themes. As we dive into each theme, we employ different art techniques and skills — drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture — to help reinforce what we are learning.

Classes last one hour and are open to children aged 5-12. Parents may wait in the maker space while their children are in class.

Spring Class Schedule

Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 3:00-3:50

February: Carnival around the world. Papier mâché mask making in the Brazilian and Italian traditions

Children learn about “Mardi Gras” celebrations in other parts of the world. Using traditional Italian techniques and modern materials, they will make a papier mâché mask inspired by the work of Brazilian artist Andressa Ferrari. There will be a small parade on the last day of class to show off our masks!

March: Amazing Insects! From Bees to Butterflies, Drawing and Painting Patterns from the Natural World

Children learn about the anatomy of insects and the usefulness (and dangers!) of colorful markings and patterns in the natural world. Using drawing, painting, and collage skills, they will make their own colorful insects.

April: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Printmaking with Household Items

For Earth month, children will learn about recycling and how cutting down on waste can help the environment. We will use common household waste (styrofoam containers, tetrapaks, cardboard) to make beautiful prints celebrating the natural world. (Note: Classes start the second week of April to accommodate the Easter holiday)

May: How does your garden grow? Using flowers and natural dyes in the classroom.

Children will learn how art supplies are made from natural materials. They will explore the Japanese art of tataki zome, or flower pounding, to make designs on textiles, prepare vines to be made into vine charcoal that they can take home at the end of class, and experiment with natural dyes made from copper, berries, nuts, and flowers.
